Sonny Software was founded in 1998 by Jonathan Ashwell, M.D. Sonny Software's first act was to acquire the rights for Bookends Plus from Westing Software. Jonathan first created Bookends for the Apple II in 1983, making it the first popular reference management program for "microcomputers". Bookends for the Mac was released in 1987.

Who's Sonny? Sonny was rescued from an animal shelter in New York City in 1977 and quickly earned the title of "World's Greatest Cat". He would lie in Jonathan's lap encouragingly while he (Jonathan, not Sonny) sat in front of a 12" green phosphor monitor and struggled to learn 6502 machine language, and was there when the first version of Bookends was created for the Mac. Sonny died in 1988, but as the name of our company attests, he has not been forgotten.
