Sonny Software and RedleX have teamed up to integrate the processes of manuscript writing and reference management. The Mellel word processor is "Bookends-aware", meaning that it can communicate with Bookends to manage citations and bibliographies.
Citations: the integrated way
To start using Mellel with Bookends, simply choose Mellel as your word processor in Bookends' Preferences. Similarly, choose Bookends as the Bibliography Application in Mellel's Preferences.
You can enter a temporary citation into a Mellel document by clicking on the Copy Citation button, choosing the Copy Selected menu item when the Hits window is in front, or dragging and dropping the reference(s) you want to cite from the Hits window.
A temporary citation in Mellel might look like this:

You can edit a citation object by double-clicking it. If you double-click it with the Option key held down, Bookends will come to the front and display the corresponding reference.
Inserting formatted citations into footnotes is just as easy: choose the Copy Formatted menu item or drag and drop references from the Hits window with the Option key held down.
Write, Cite, and Scan
This is the Bibliography palette in Mellel:

The field contains a list of temporary citations used in the manuscript. Citations are added to the list as they are inserted into the document (Copy Citation, drag and drop from the Hits window, etc.). With this list you can:
Drag and drop citations to other locations in the document.
Double-click to insert a citation at another location in the document.
Command-double-click to scroll the document to the next occurrence of the citation.
Using the Mellel Bibliography palette you can easily switch to Bookends, search Bookends databases for references, and have Bookends scan your manuscript. Verify citations to ensure that they are not ambiguous and exist in the Bookends database you have open (automatically done before a scan). Other useful features include the ability to enter citations from the keyboard and have them converted to Mellel citations (Enter citation manually) and instant conversion of citations entered with other word processors to Mellel citations (Convert text to citations).
Another particularly useful feature is that Option-double-clicking on a citation, in the document or the citation list, will instantly bring Bookends to the front and display the corresponding reference.
When you are ready, click the Scan the document icon to bring Bookends to the front and begin the scan. The revised document, with bibliography at the end (if requested), will replace the manuscript. If you scan again, Bookends will do its work in the background, and only come to the front if necessary (for example, to resolve an ambiguous citation). You can also unscan, and when you rescan you will be given the opportunity to change to a different format.
Mellel stores the reference information for each citation, which lets you sync your Bookends reference database with collaborators with whom you share the document. These are the options you have in the Mellel Edit -> Bibliography menu:
