Re: Generating Bibliography for LyX from Bookends
Hm, LateX is not the easiest thing to move to on a deadline (I tend to recommend a Markdown workflow with Pandoc which is simpler and far more flexible). Nevertheless, Bookends is an excellent choice for LaTex companion. Here is what I would do: 1) If you haven't done it yet go to Settings ▸ BibTeX ...

Re: APA 7 and DOI/URL hyperlinks formating in MS Word
Jon, I have a slightly tangential question. I have a either/or syntax: [$Link$]({$https://doi.org/$u17^z}) So if u17 is present use it otherwise fall back to URL (this uses ^ which IIRC is normally uses for p or pp). Could I change the link text to also change depending on whether u17 is present or ...

Re: Bookends 14.1.7: Citekeys
Well, the problem is when there is no "standard". BibTeX is flawed and ancient, and its ascii limitations are due to technical inertia, not common sense. So, other people made new packages in the TeX world that do support unicode, and now you have to deal with a complex mess of competing t...

Re: No Journal Glossary update for BibTex files
How are you using the glossary to be able to make these changes exactly? I probably don't understand exactly the ins and outs, but i thought the glossary files only worked when editing a reference to add to the database or generating a finished bibliography? Then again bibtex is exported using a for...

Re: Context-sensitive Citation Options (Biblio > Formats Manager)
From p.270 of the user manual: You may want to mention the authors’ names in front of the citation, for example …Oscar et al. (2011). You can tell Bookends to do this by placing a caret immediately after the opening delimiter of the in-text citation. For example, {^Oscar, Jones, and Peyton, 2011, #3...

Re: Registering .bib for import with Bookends
Rebuilding the LaunchServices database didn't make any difference. From your link which links to https://eclecticlight.co/2023/07/06/how-to-get-the-right-app-to-open-a-document-and-fix-launchservices-problems/ — I then used his precize.app and UTIutility.app https://eclecticlight.co/taccy-signet-pre...

Registering .bib for import with Bookends
This is a fairly minor request. By default, it seems that when I want to "open" a .bib file in macOS finder, there is no option to use Bookends: Screenshot 2024-02-18 at 11.22.42.png And when I want to add Bookends, is is also not a "Recommended Application": Screenshot 2024-02-1...

Re: Mismatch example vs. scan
It may not be connected, but I have occasionally seen errors in my BibTeX output where the author punctuation is missing in the BibTeX file, though clearly present in the format manager. I could never reproduce this error, and deleting my BibTeX file and recreating it (via sync) would get the names ...

Re: Problems with macros in Bookends 14.2.7
I don't use Keyboard Maestro, but BetterTouchTool, and it is working when I reassign keyboard bindings and mouse gestures etc. to control Bookends 14.2.7 — so at least it is not a generic change.

Re: [Feature Request] Paper Retraction Checker?
Jon just added a retraction check for citation checks using OpenAlex in V14.2.7 — there is even a smart group for retractions. The other additions to the citations search are brilliant, especially that we can even include this in our formats, so that e.g. for our own citations we get a live tally of...

Re: Script: Capture DOI field on PDF and run AutoFill
One clear example is Annual Reviews: Screenshot 2023-10-16 at 08.38.07.png The text copies as: https://doi.org/10.1146/annurev-vision-090721- 110411 Yes, this is the reason PDF is such a horrendous archival format -- the linebreak used for layout splits the semantic content URL  — you can work...

Quick Add arXiv -- get DOI?
I think arXiv didn't have DOIs previously, but DOIs are now available and at least when I quick add an arxiv number the DOI field is not filled in: This ref arXiv:2308.08708 https://arxiv.org/abs/2308.08708 has this DOI https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2308.08708 But quick add arXiv:2308.08708 doesn't...

Re: Loving Bookends
Yes, iCloud sync can be a bit fussy. However, my experience is that for whatever reason Bookends sync (some sort of database data) syncs much more reliably than files do. I love that I can go to a talk and add papers that were referenced (I use my iPhone with a small bluetooth keyboard for note taki...
