Re: Editing bibliography to something non-standard
Thank you for these very helpful replies. I now have multiple ways of solving the problem. The easiest is unchecking the "Retain Hidden Citations" option in BE which solves the problem instantly. Normally the BE-generated bibliographies are fine and merely require minor formatting tweaks i...

Editing bibliography to something non-standard
I am not sure whether this is a Bookends or a word processor issue. I would be happy for the solution to involve Bookends, MS Word, LibreOffice or Nisus Writer. And sorry if this is covered in the User Guide, though I did try to locate it there. Maybe the answer is a simple page reference in the Use...

Default Zoom for PDFs
When I move to a new reference, PDFs are displayed so that the whole of the first page is displayed. This is not a problem as pressing Cmd-+ two or three times usually zooms in to the width of the document. But it would be very convenient if there was a way to set the default so that it zooms in so ...

Adding cited references to hits list
Something I would find useful is a means of identifying all the references that are cited in a particular document. What I have in mind is starting with a file containing a load of citations of references in Bookends, scanning that document and have bookends add all the references it finds to the Hi...

List view - making selected entry clearer
In List view, alternate entries are pale grey and white, which is fine. When an item is seleted it turns dark blue, which is good, but when you then click on the attachment, it reverts to grey, a slightly darker shade of grey than the one used for alternate references. When this happens, I find that...

I will do this when I have finished work for the day. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Duplicate entries on import
Jon knows this already as he directed me to this thread when I reported the problem, but you (JohnAtl) are not alone. I get the same problem. I have had it before on a different machine, and thought the problem was solved, but it started again recently. As Jon's advice is that it must be something a...

Re: Dates in citations
Thank you. Though I have quite a few Newspaper articles in my database, tagged as such, I had never noticed that, presumably because "Harvard" does not make use of this, and when entering data, changing the default to Newspaper article is often something I remember to do only when I have e...

Dates in citations
I am sure I have solved this problem before, but I have upgraded my computer and have lost my original set up. My problem is that I want to display citations of journal articles (and books and ...) using an author-date format, with a bibliography. No problem with that. I then have a category "M...

Re: Hardware and handling very large databases
Thanks. That idea of the Apple store had come to mind, but Covid=19 risks mean it is not a sensible strategy for me. I have not been into buildings other than home and medical centres since March. I will try more experimenting with the cache.

Hardware and handling very large databases
My database is now around 32000 references and is still growing, and though Bookends basically works very well on both my iMac and Macbook, there are some operations that are frustratingly slow. Moving from one Group to "All", or to a group that contains many references, can take as much a...

Importing XML files from dfr.jstor.org
Can Bookends import the XML files that are produced by creating a database using dfr.jstor.org? Maybe I could not find any import filter that would work, but maybe that is just my failing. Using latest version of Bookends. I tried the three JSTOR import filters, but none worked. Also, I could not se...

Tinderbox integration
The Tinderbox integration basically works nicely but could be improved. I create notes in TB by Option-Command-dragging from Bookends into Tinderbox (or, when initiating the drag causes TB to minimize itself - I have no idea why this happens) by copying and pasting a link into TB. One niggle is that...

Further questions on Bookends-Tinderbox link
The Cmd-Opt drag into Tinderbox is useful but I have two problems with it. (1) Sometimes when I hold Cmd-Opt and click down on the highlighted reference, other windows, including Tinderbox, immediately get minimized. Sometimes they do not. I guess there is a conflict over key assignments but I have ...
