If you have other suggestions for an ASCII pair, please make them. Thanks for the shockingly fast reply. I think for my purposes, it would be helpful to use two-character delimiters, if that would be an option. Something like |{...}| or {|...|} with a pipe and a bracket. A pipe alone could have som...

Hmm.

I tried this out, and it's true that {{ a, b, c }} will turn into {a, b, c} after a scan without trying to look up a reference. However, once I've scanned the document once, it's now turned all of my {{a, b, c}}s into {a, b, c}s, and so the next time I try to scan it, it will again treat the thing a...

Great! And, an impressive 24-hour turnaround on the bugfix. Thanks for looking into it.

PDF rotated in viewer

I'm using BE 10.0.3, and I attached a PDF to an entry that was scanned 2-up. For some reason, the PDF displays in the within BE sideways (it would be correct if it were rotated 90 degrees to the left), although the same PDF shows up within Preview, Skim, EagleFiler, and Acrobat 7 (and -- in fact, in...

Bibliography sorting oddity

I'm trying out Bookends with a very simple database and a very simple Word document to see if I can get the basics down. I have two references with the same author and year in the database. I do a citation like this {smith, first; smith, second} (where "first" and "second" are wo...

I should have searched first before I posted my question in the other forum, but there's a bit more discussion of these things in this thread:

Quick response, thanks! And this I think made me believe that I will be able to do what I need to do. Also: I was clearly concentrating on the wrong part of the user guide -- I see now where these are documented. 1. You can cite just by date by preceding the citation with a %: {%Smith, 2006, wheveve...

Citations like Kim, M.-Y. (1998a, 1998b) (see also Oh 2002)

To do this in Endnote, I basically had to type the author name myself and exclude it from the citation form, so the Endnote citation was just (1998a, 1998b), leaving me free to make all the typos I could manage in the authors' names. I've been puzzling over the formatting for a while, and I'm not se...

BTW, you might take a look at Mellel. Much cheaper than the Word 2004 upgrade, and you might find it suits your needs (it's worth a look, in any case). I'd love to try Mellel seriously, but until it allows reference to autonumbers, I can't really use it for the majority of what I write. There did s...

Ok, I tried saving my document as RTF and sending it through Bookends. Worked as advertised, and my bookmarks survived. One downside is that the only options seem to be to create a new document with the temporary citations replaced with no hidden information (so, no unscan or rescan) or not create a...

In short, it is a bug in Word X. You can work around it by saving as RTF and scanning that. The bug was fixed in Word 2004. Yep, that sound like it might be it. Sorry, I searched the forums, but I missed that "issues" page on the main site. I haven't switcheed to Word 2004 because I heard...

Word bookmarks vanish

Playing around with the demo version of Bookends to see if it meets my needs, I discovered something that I think will be a big problem for the way I have used Word up to now. I don't know if there's likely to be a workaround, but I'll report it anyway for any thoughts... I use a lot of autonumbered...

Ah, ok. Your workaround doesn't sound too complicated, I can make do with adding to the static group each time. So, perhaps then I'll put this in the suggestion box: Maybe the scan window can have an option to add the hits to a static group (maybe selected by popup, unless it is common to have a who...

Multiple documents (chapters)?

I'm just trying Bookends out for the first time and playing with the demo version to see if it will be of use to me. It looks quite nice, I'm impressed so far. I'm not coming from any other citation software, so I don't have any other experience to compare it to. The project that I am embarking on r...
