Re: Must be implemented in Mellel. Bookends hasNothingToDoWi

Is it really true that it would have to be implemented totally from Mellel? If Redlers provided info on the file format couldn´t you open and manipulate their file? Or could it be applescripted? Even if it were all done in Mellel, it would probably only happend with interest and input from your en...

Yes, I see that. Looks like the styled text offset is incorrect. I'll look into this.

This has gotten pretty specific, so let's take this off the forum. Please email us about it at

support@sonnysoftware.com

and we'll continue the discussion.

Re: export to html

styling yes. but how can I use eg different colors for each field (maybe I missed something again)? Well, if the text is colored in Bookends, that will be included in the HTML output. If you want black and white text in the database (very likely) and color only in the HTML, then use the same strate...

Bookends won't do that for you automatically. It is possible to add HTML tags in the format itself (enclose them in $ signs or ` backquotes), which will then be output with the reference data. You could put this in the Order field, for example: $<span id="autart">$a$</span>$ Span is used f...

Re: export to html

Will there be a feature in B8 to export databases in html format, or is it already possible and I just missed it? Hi Tom, It's already possible and you just missed it. In the Bib Formatter menu option, you can specify many options for outputting a bibliography (format name, destination, etc.). One ...

Hi danzac, The backquote ` (not ') is a "force quote", meaning that whatever is between the `` will be output, regardless of whether the field that follows it is empty or not. You want to use the $$, which will not be output if the field that follows it is not. Remember that a space in the...

Nigel,

Agreed. But I would point out that this is a feature that must be implemented in Mellel, not Bookends. Bookends would have nothing to do with it.

Re: PDFs

I like these suggestions. However, I also think that Bookends should allow sensible renaming of PDFs. It provides built in sensible redundancy. If something should happend to a bookends database (I know backup backup backup) then unrenamed PDFs are useless. It's not a bad idea, and as I've said, I'...

That's great news. So, in version 8, when I right-click on the bulleted Keyword with the PDF filename, it'll give me an option to "Show in Finder", or something like that? Yes, that's exactly how it works. I can't do that now, can I? No. Thanks for a great program - I'm recommending it to...

Right. It's another Unicode/Bookends 7 thing. Long file names in Bookends 8 are not a problem.

Hi prop, All good ideas! Bookends 8 has already anticipated much of this: 1. You can have subfolders in the attachments folder (named by journal if you like). You can select which one to use when you drop. 2. Files are automatically given unique names if necessary (by the addition of a random number...

Hi Brian, The problem is that the characters you exported from EndNote (version 8?) are encoded in Unicode, which Bookends 7 does not understand. So you see the MacRoman equivalent of the characters (the square root sign and so on). If you export from EndNote 7, I think the import should be OK (as E...

Re: page number and page range

I don't think there was a special way to do this in Endnote, either - I just used an additional field called "Total Pages." The miser in me doesn't want to dedicate a field to it if avoidable, but it's no problem, particularly as I understand there will be an extra two user fields in Book...

Re: page number and page range

My problem is that for some of the types of bulletins, memoirs, monographs that I cite, some journal styles require the volume number and page range (e.g., 32:1-117, just like a journal), whereas others require only the total number of pages (e.g., Memoir 32, 117 p.) Is it possible to have Bookends...

Re: Company as Author name - same problem

A similar issue comes up when the author is a company. The Turabian bibliography formatter outputs "Bank, The World" in the reference list for publications where I've input "The World Bank" in the author field. Leaving the author out entirely gives in-text references like ( , Ja...
