Re: Clarification on syncing behavior

The sync frequency referred to in the User Guide references to metadata (e.g. authors, title, etc.). Bookends doesn't sync PDFs, that's handled by whatever file sync service you use (Dropbox, iCloud Drive, etc.), and Bookends has no influence over when that occurs.

Re: Final sigma.

Terminate the title with a comma and it will be output as entered. That will take care of the capitalization. As far as the terminal sigma, you'll have to try this and see if your ς is left alone. As an aside, I don't know if you also have Mellel, but if you do its integration with Bookends is excel...

Re: Some questions on using Bookends for syncing in a potentially unique case

I know you can switch between them, but I'm not sure if there can be unintended consequences in edge cases. Serge may have a more definitive answer for you.

Re: Some questions on using Bookends for syncing in a potentially unique case

I will answer your final questions. Know that you always work with local copies of your attachments, if it's on an Apple server only Bookends can't do anything with it. The copy on the server is just the intermediary that lets all of your devices have access to the same PDF. No PDF is "archival...

Re: Observations on Importing from a Watch Folder

I had a sudden thought that maybe this was related to the "Import To Hits List" checkbox in the Import Reference dialog window. I ticked it and, in fact, I now see the imported reference is a hit. It doesn't happen if the reference is already in the library because the metadata aren't impo...

Re: Observations on Importing from a Watch Folder

Sorry, that's what I've always been doing. And I just tested again -- the reference is not marked (not a hit). Whatever is causing this to happen for you isn't doing any harm, I suggest we let it go.

Re: Observations on Importing from a Watch Folder

That didn't happen when I first tested, and it didn't when I tested just now. Clear the Hits list first (Hits menu) and try again. If it still happens for you I'll have to think about how that could be.

Re: Observations on Importing from a Watch Folder

I'm not sure why you see that behavior, on several levels. References created when PDFs are imported from the watch folder are not made hits. The renaming does happen (a random number is added to disambiguate it), but not the way it should (it's the original name with a number added). I'll look into...

Re: Superb improvement of Journal Glossary

How so? The glossary is simply a tab-delimited text file. To import a entry you''d need to create one yourself with 3 columns, save it, and import it. I don't know why anyone would want to do that rather than enter the information in the glossary directly. Note that you can open the glossary in any ...

Re: Superb improvement of Journal Glossary

Thank you, I'm glad you like the new UI. For me, the biggest improvement is the massive increase in journals the Medline glossary, which now contains over 19000 journals, compared to a bit over 800 in the old Concise Medline glossary. This was made possible by rewriting the search logic in the forma...

Re: Allow right click (to copy citations) when Bookends in background

If you have already selected the reference you want to cite in Bookends, then it's a duplication of work. But if you haven't, which is often/usually the case, it's less work to use Floating Citations. In your use case, what would make it less "clunky"? Perhaps a keyboard shortcut that woul...

Re: Remove attachments from batch

Understood. I'll just point out one more thing that you might not be aware of (or if you are, others reading this might not be). You can have PDFs in many different folders, not just the default folder, and Bookends will find them. These are called "ad hoc" attachment folders, and you can ...

Bookends 15 released

This major release introduces support for Citation Style Language (CSL) styles. CSL styles are similar to Bookends formats, and in many cases they can be used interchangeably. Formats have many advantages, but if you're in a pinch and need a format that we don't ship you, will likely find a CSL styl...

Price increase

When Bookends 11 was released in 2013, the price was reduced from $99 to $59.99. Since that time, inflation has eroded the dollar's value by more than 32%. Unfortunately, it has reached the point where prices must be adjusted, and with the release of Bookends 15 the cost of new and upgrade licenses ...

Re: More than one computer (a user has no need for this)

Thank you, kind of you to say that. WRT iCloud data sync (not iCloud file sync, which unlike the data sync is exposed to users), if you have general qualms based on what you've read or observed, I can't comment. But if you have particular issues with Bookends cloud sync, please contact us. There are...
