One single database is what I prefer.

Bookends allows you to create groups for managing references for specific projects, one of many reasons why it is better than Endnote. Keywords is another way to retrieve references associated with particular interests or projects.

I can't clear a reference from a static group either by edit:clear or by delete key (which produced a message 'out of bounds error').

A -61 error usually means the file is already open. Make sure you don't have two copies of Bookends running (unlikely) and that the database gives you read/write permission (locked databases will give the same error).

I've downloaded BE9 and get error messages. I repaired and rebuilt my database but the problem is still there.

ie Search Error -61 when trying to access groups. Then SQL/regex search appears.
Reference window doesn't open: Search Error -61

List window is also truncated, fixed in width so can't see ...

One of the drawbacks of Endnote (among many) is the long reference entry window that doesn't fit on a screen. Wider is preferable to longer for reference entry.
