But Fenton, I do have a question for you. How does JACS handle citations to one paper that appear in more than one place in the article? In other words, if you cite Smith et al., 2005, JACS... twice, the first time in a group with others, the second time by himself, does the bibliography contain tw...

That's not correct. Nature has never combined references in a bibliography (at least since I have followed it, which is for some time). And Science dropped it a few years ago (because it made it difficult to have embedded HTML links to the on-line references, I was told). Sure, but Science and Natu...

Re: Bookends and Pages 2

Its the only thing that is stopping me from using Pages for all my grant applications. Hi- I picked up that you are using BE for grant applications. That is also my primary use for this program, and I had some unresolved issues with BE in that regard. Do you know how to compound several references ...

Hi ... Any formats you create (with the New button in the Format Manager window) go into.... Thanks, but perhaps I was not properly explaining the issue. I wish to create a new "type" within a particular format. For example, using the "journal" type I wished to create a new type....

maybe missed something in the manual..?

Hi Was going about the creation of a new export format type. So I chose "unused 1". Afterwards, I wanted to give this new type a more descriptive name. According to my mac's finder, there is no file by the name of "unusued" (I had thought to simply change to file name). So, what'...

Hi Jon I can imagine that it might be difficult to implement. Guess most of your users are not in my field. The chemistry journals by ACS (Americal Chemical Society), Elsevier and Wiley do use it. I don't know very much at all about writing progs; perhaps such a function could eventually be included...

Grüßgott Gavagai,

it sounds like you must enter "DeRose" or whatever into the list of exceptions that BE will not change, i.e. "USA" "DNA" "DNS" etc. There is no way around that situation in any other progs that I know.

Hi

As Jon suspected, the true cause of those three glitches was incorrect citing, ie. all of the quotes cited sequentially must appear within the same pair of curly brackets.

back w/ a few other questions elsewhere.

ordering and sorting of bibiographic annotation in text

Hi Here is the chemist back with more questions about the format of output bibliographies. 1. Assume that I follow a sentence by at least three references. These are annotated in the text as 1, 2, 3. How is it possible to change this to 1-3? This is standard in all scientific journals that I am awar...

Hmmm. What are the odds that this could be included in a future version of BE? Is this too drastic? Not to be too picky, but when writing scientific papers, this is a common way of keeping the number of column-inches under control.

grouping of references in bibliography

Hi- In my "spare" time I'm (still) learning how to use BE. For example, EN will allow the user to group several references in the bibliography that are quoted together in the text, thus: 1. Blair, T. J. of Bull. 2000 , 20 , 234-235; Schroeder, G. Hypocrites 2005 , 234 , 1002-1023. 2. Bush, ...

Ack...actually the alternate import mechanism that is described in the bookends manual correctly generates a interchange file from EndNote:

In EndNote:
• Examine the File -> Output Styles menu.
• If “Refer Exportâ€

XML conversion error

Hello- I am a new user of Bookends. Have many EndNote files that I wish to convert to XML, and thence Bookends. My employer just updated the G4 to OS 10.4 This computer has numberous EndNote 8 files but EndNote 8 won't run on OS 10.4  . A networked PC does have PC EndNote 8, and so I converted...
