To wrap up this thread: Jon generously spent some time working with me on this, and it looks like hte above advice is correct.
You can't bind subsets in Bookends, so no matter how your MLA string is formatted one of three omissions (either city, publisher, or year) will cause a a format error. My ...

JSTOR URL construction
I have a question about how Bookends constructs the URLs that it uses for JSTOR approved access.
My University doesn't use a VPN for off-campus proxy. Instead, it uses a login through a web proxy that reforms URLS. So when accessing JSTOR directly,
http://jstor.org --> http://www.jstor.org.proxy ...

Limits of binding in the formats manager
This describes how I understand binding in Format Manager and what I suspect is a fundamental limit that prevents specifying certain correct outputs. I give an example in MLA style.
I've been wresting since I got Bookends with a fairly basic limitation that was hard for me to articulate. I think I ...

Cautiously interested in complex feature requests....
There are obviously a number of technical issues that would be involved both with syncing edits and with "keeping organized" (in the iTunes sense) - and the code would have to accommodate the fact that other programs can edit Spotlight comments, files can be moved etc.
Now, I would love to have the ...

Spotlight workarounds: Naming attachments, raw text exports
For those users who rely on Spotlight search results are an important part of their workflow, I can suggest a few workarounds.
I'm personally sympathetic to the Spotlight desire, at least to a certain extent. In an example of my workflow: I keep notes, draft documents, multimedia resources, and ...

Trying to omit a character from MLA:Journal Article
Because this is a very similar issue with understanding how binding affect format fields, I'm adding it to the same thread.
The MLA journal format doesn't quite handle missing page numbers correctly.** I want the : to drop when the page numbers are missing, but I can't get it to bind correctly ...

Seeing what you last worked with first
I understand if you don't want to add this feature - it is pretty esoteric, and it might annoy users who always want to start with Ref#1. However, I did give two good examples of related apps that remember column sorts between sessions: One is Mail, one is iTunes. I like to leave both in reverse ...

Default column sorting in Bookends List View
I add a lot of references, and I usually want to be looking at the ones I just added. (Reverse chronological - I order Mail and iTunes this way as well).
I've noticed that every single time I open Bookends, I sort the Ref# column in Bookends List View so that I can see what I'm doing. Every time ...
