Wrapup: Use the best approximation and spot-check

To wrap up this thread: Jon generously spent some time working with me on this, and it looks like hte above advice is correct. You can't bind subsets in Bookends, so no matter how your MLA string is formatted one of three omissions (either city, publisher, or year) will cause a a format error. My pe...

A few things: The way the browser accesses JSTOR and the SRU interface are very different. A JSTOR filter for use with browsers will be reinstated in the next update. I've had one thought that might (or might not) help with VPN access. I'll add it in the next update and we'll see. Jon Sonny Softwar...

JSTOR URL construction

I have a question about how Bookends constructs the URLs that it uses for JSTOR approved access. My University doesn't use a VPN for off-campus proxy. Instead, it uses a login through a web proxy that reforms URLS. So when accessing JSTOR directly, http://jstor.org --> http://www.jstor.org.proxy.lib...

Jon, I wasn't implying that Bookends doesn't largely work or claiming it doesn't ship with good defaults. I was offering an example of how binding as defined in Bookends *can never* properly format MLA, or any style that requires binding to a subset of terms. Sorry if that got lost in an overly verb...

Limits of binding in the formats manager

This describes how I understand binding in Format Manager and what I suspect is a fundamental limit that prevents specifying certain correct outputs. I give an example in MLA style. I've been wresting since I got Bookends with a fairly basic limitation that was hard for me to articulate. I think I'v...

Cautiously interested in complex feature requests....

There are obviously a number of technical issues that would be involved both with syncing edits and with "keeping organized" (in the iTunes sense) - and the code would have to accommodate the fact that other programs can edit Spotlight comments, files can be moved etc. Now, I would love to...

Spotlight workarounds: Naming attachments, raw text exports

For those users who rely on Spotlight search results are an important part of their workflow, I can suggest a few workarounds. I'm personally sympathetic to the Spotlight desire, at least to a certain extent. In an example of my workflow: I keep notes, draft documents, multimedia resources, and bibl...

Thank you

I just launched Bookends and it came up with my latest information. As always, thank you so much.

Ooh. Elegant.

So, force-quoted matching sets of paranthesis are stripped out if and only if empty? You know, actually, never mind. It works, and I'm going to use that trick on other things now.

Thank you!

Thanks for the quick reply! I can use `` - but I think that mean that now, instead of having a trailing : problem when there are no page numbers, I instead have an even worse trailing ) problem if there is no date. In an ideal world, I'd always have complete information for every source - but in rea...

Trying to omit a character from MLA:Journal Article

Because this is a very similar issue with understanding how binding affect format fields, I'm adding it to the same thread. The MLA journal format doesn't quite handle missing page numbers correctly.** I want the : to drop when the page numbers are missing, but I can't get it to bind correctly. Any...

Thanks for the SQL groups tip - but can I set one so that it is the default view when the app launches? Otherwise it is the same for me to just hit the sort columns all the time. This is not a functionality request - Bookeneds is totally functional. It is a workflow nitpick - I was hoping maybe ther...

Seeing what you last worked with first

I understand if you don't want to add this feature - it is pretty esoteric, and it might annoy users who always want to start with Ref#1. However, I did give two good examples of related apps that remember column sorts between sessions: One is Mail, one is iTunes. I like to leave both in reverse chr...

Default column sorting in Bookends List View

I add a lot of references, and I usually want to be looking at the ones I just added. (Reverse chronological - I order Mail and iTunes this way as well). I've noticed that every single time I open Bookends, I sort the Ref# column in Bookends List View so that I can see what I'm doing. Every time, ma...
