Thanks for the reply, Jon. I would like to be able to sort authors in the reference list window according to first author, which is not possible at present. All of my (approx. 50) publications are listed according to alphabetical order of all of the authors, leading to a very messy list where papers ...

Importing first author only
Can anyone suggest a method to import the first author only into one of the user fields? I also want to keep all of the authors in the author field. It appears that once all authors are imported, the parsing engine doesn't want to go back and have another go at extracting the first author from the ...

Name conversion
In Bookends names are sorted in the bibliography according to the surname and first name/initial(s). This can lead to an anomaly in the sorting order of the bibliopgrahy:
Smith, John A. 2003 Title of article, volume, issue, pages
Smith, John A. 2002 Title of article, volume, issue, pages
where the ...

Temporary text citations using Mellel
Hi Jon,
Bookends 8.1.1 looks good. One aspect that isn't working so well is the use of temporary citations using Mellel. This allows the use of {} containing some text to refer to a particular paper. After selecting "Convert text to citations" in Mellel, a Bookends offers a selection of papers that ...

Changing the case of fields in imported references
Under the import filter manager, I suggest including a feature to automatically change the case of fields to "Sentence case", "Title Case", "UPPER CASE" or "lower case". At present, Web of Science imports have the journal field all in upper case. I know it can be changed under Refs > Global Change ...

Re: bibliographies and citations
Yes, that's what custom citation formats are for (see second tab of the format definition window). The citations can be formatted in any way you like, just like a bibliography. The only limitations are (1) custom citations can't have styled text, and (2) Bookends won't add the a, b after a year ...
Wish list
I downloaded a trial version of Bookends today and it looks like a very capable replacement for EndNote, at one quarter the price for the competitive upgrade. It does, however, require an adjustment in thinking as the window containing a single reference is the default working window, unlike EndNote ...

Greek symbols in title field
I occasionally have references with titles that contain a Greek symbol. Changing the font to Symbol for one letter in the title doesn't change anything, however the entire title of either of the two adjacent references is converted to Greek! Moving back to the original reference, the letter is ...
