Re: Edit reference in standalone window gone?

We opened a thread about this before Bookends 13 was released, and having double clicking open or affect PDFs seemed the most asked for... Thanks for adding an option for this. I think, though, that you might want to rethink how you get feedback on significant feature changes. I'm a member of this ...

Re: Edit reference in standalone window gone?

Also, double click now opens the PDF display, but pressing Return or Enter sill open the reference window for editing. Would you consider creating an option to change that double-click behavior? After searching for a reference, I often use the trackpad to select the specific reference I want, and i...

Re: Does a Reference Type called "Review" make any sense?

Is there a way to search for or create a smart group for all reviews, if the references do not contain the word "review" in the Keywords field? I just want to see at a glance all the reviews. You can use an SQL/RegEx search to do this. If you're using the default Review reference type, yo...

Re: Bookends 12.5 Feedback

My workflow usually involves entering citation information for a publication in Bookends, then taking notes in DEVONthink Pro, and finally returning to Bookends to type a short abstract. So my preference would be to have place and publisher above abstract and notes. But it's not a strong preference.

Re: Bookends 12.5 Feedback

Yes, I see your point. But you've made the Bookends window very wide. You could lessen the width considerably have the reference pane take up the majority of the window. In fact the resulting window can be almost the same width as the old standalone window you're showing in the image. I like the id...

Re: Bookends 12.5 Feedback

You can still have the PDF open in Acrobat or a browser. You can close the lower pane in the Bookends window if you like and make the reference pane as wide as you wish (within reason). I don't see how this is any different from using the standalone window with Acrobat/browser display of a PDF. The...

Re: Bookends 12.5 Feedback

Having multiple windows where you can edit references is a nonstarter. There are way too many problems with that approach. Ah, well, so it goes. I thought I'd ask since DEVONthink Pro, OmniFocus, and a few other applications I use offer the feature. Read-only windows would unnecessarily complicate ...

Re: Bookends 12.5 Feedback

Would it be possible to have the option of opening multiple windows for the same library that could show different database entries, in the same way that Mail.app allows one to open multiple Viewer windows? That would address most of my concerns, since I could keep one small for data entry and one l...

Re: Bookends 12.5 Feedback

Thanks for your reply. I get the difficulty of maintaining code for separate windows. A small reference window was useful for entering publication data from a PDF document without obscuring part of the PDF window in the background, but I can find a workaround. As for adding all the fields to the fir...

Re: Bookends 12.5 Feedback

I'm somewhat taken aback by the decision to eliminate the standalone reference window, and curious about why it was eliminated. One of the advantages of a windowing operating system has been multiple application windows. (I have Mail.app set to open messages in a new window for that reason.) In Book...

Re: Conditional formatting based on publication date?

Hi Jon - the trick you mentioned should do the trick, so to speak! Thanks! I think I can use that for outputting the publication information. I can just replace the author name manually; there won't be that many references.

Conditional formatting based on publication date?

I'm preparing an article for the historical journal Intersections , which requires some particular formatting: For works published in 1800 and after, the authors are indicated by last name and initials, and publication is indicated by Place: Date. For works published before 1800, the authors are ind...

How big is your database?

I've started this poll because I'm curious to find out how large other users' Bookends databases are. I have about 2,900 entries in mine. I was corresponding last night with Jon over a database corruption issue, and he mentioned that my database was large. I was wondering if that's in comparison wit...

Thanks!

Jon--thanks! I should have thought of that. In any case, a useful workaround for me was to open the file in BBEdit, copy the data, and paste it to a new text file. The new file was encoded in MacRoman, and Bookends read it just fine. Brian P.S. Thanks for the quick support, including my typo when I ...

(Incorrect translation in past message)

Oops! The previous post has an error because of the way the Mac character set was translated. In fact, the character "í" is translated not as two question marks but as the square root sign followed by the does not equal sign. I can post a picture if that would help.
