So it looks as though it did import - just to the bottom of the "notes" section.
I exported the Endnote X references to xml, then went to import references on my copy of Bookends 8, and selected "Import references from: XML (EndNote) from file" without "Import to ...

I'm trying to make the switch from Endnote & its many frustrations to bookends. However, after successfully importing my Endnote references, I found that the links to their associated .pdfs were lost in translation.
