Is it possible to do the reverse, that is, suppress a citation so it doesn't occur in the bibliography?

The key for me is the books, etc., in the bibliography at the end will not have been cited earlier in the paper; they are additional helpful works for further study. Perhaps I can rephrase the question differently: In the same document, can I make some temporary citations output as citation/footnote...
