Suppress author and title
The metacharacter & is supposed to suppress both author and title from a processed in-text citation, right (User Guide p. 246)? In MLA 8 (at least), it makes both author and title appear, rather than disappear. In MLA 8, it should produce a citation with only page numbers. Is this a bug?

Re: MLA 8 title appearing for no reason
Remove the short title and I believe the problem will go away. I was wrong about this short title aspect of this; I went to delete the short title and realized that there was not one. In the attached screenshot all three citations refer to exactly the same reference (the first contains the % modifi...

Re: MLA 8 title appearing for no reason
Thanks, Jon. That's not what's happening here. The same issue doesn't present with references that don't have short titles. There is no reason that the book title should ever appear unless there were more than one work by the same author, which there isn't!

MLA 8 title appearing for no reason
Citing in MLA 8, I have an in-text citation that looks like this: -Perkowska, 2008, #70717@33 There is no other text by Perkowska in my bibliography. Given this, and the fact that I am suppressing the authors name with the - modifier, only the page numbers should appear: (33). For some reason, the t...

Book Chapter citation problems in Bookends for iOS
There seems to be a problem with the way Bookends for iOS renders Book Chapters (called "Book Sections" in Zotero). The output for a book chapter on Bookends for iOS looks like this (problem in MLA 8 highlighted in bold; not familiar enough with APA to do the same): MLA 8: Agamben, Giogio....

Re: Bookends for iOS released
Thank you, Serge. I will try that. However, I should note that the Bookends folder doesn't show up in iCloud Drive on iOS or macOS.

Re: Bookends for iOS released
What should I do if there is no Bookends folder in my iCloud Drive? Edit : To clarify, I followed the instructions for signing in to iCloud in Bookends (which I purchased from SonnySoftware, not the MAS). My library synced to the cloud and to my various other devices flawlessly. I'd like to sync my ...

Re: Titles will not italicise
Did you check the format yourself to make sure that the title is italicized in the Order field (i.e. the f, in the case of Journal Articles)? I did, and it is. I've tampered with built-in formats before (not MLA 8), so it's possible I've messed something up for myself. I'll try a fresh reinstall of...

Re: Titles will not italicise
Jon, your solution seems to have worked for the OP, but I am having a similar problem that seems to originate in Bookends. In the Formats Manager, the MLA 8th Ed. format indicates that titles should be italicized, but nothing shows up as italicized in the "Formatted Reference" pane. Export...

This I did not know. My guess is author and title.Jon wrote:You can't combine metacharacters. So if this were added, would one want to suppress both authors and title? Or just title?

Re: Suppress title
Returning to this thread much later (while do final edits on my dissertation), I'd like to note that this function is much more common (in MLA) than you might think. Any time the the prose includes the title of the work about to be cited, the title should be suppressed in the parenthetical citation....
