I'm thinking that my problem might be I've downloaded the DEVONthink Personal trial, and maybe I need to be using DEVONthink Pro? Is this to do with scripting?

It does sound like the notes field is the better option, my only concern was that I use the Online Search option to import citations and there are often additional fields which get appended to the notes (such as Amazon price or Times cited in Google Schola...
