Re: Two window behaviors that are very non-intuitive

Hi Jon I don't want to be annoying, but I don't understand what you mean by a "thin title bar." This is the inspector: Reference Links.png and this is the terms list: Term Lists.png I don't see any difference. A visual reminder that the windows behave differently would seem in order to me. But, obvi...

Type-ahead (string matching) interferes with entering data with accented characters

I am trying to enter the author "Martinsson", but as I type the "i" in this name, Bookends attempts to match it with "Martínez" (accented i). Then when I type the "s" following the "i", nothing is entered, so the final name is entered as "Martnsson". There is something weird happening here with acce...

A suggestion to users for making keywords more effective

Hi All you smart people have probably already twigged this, but if not: If you make your keywords start with a general concept and then move to specific, it becomes easy to use the keyword Terms List panel to do searches. For instance, your keywords can be Cats Cats, feral Cats, feral, effects on na...

Two window behaviors that are very non-intuitive

I'd like to draw attention to two behaviors of Bookends that I find very non-intuitive, and, the first especially, keep getting in the way of my using Bookends effectively. 1) The "Inspector" or "Reference Links" window looks like any other window, but it acts like a panel. It floats on top of all o...

Re: Tell me about your paper-writing bookends workflow

Most of my workflow is similar to what is described by others. I am working with a lot of non-electronic documents, so I need to keep track of which library/repository that they are in, so I use the following. My color labels are: No Label/Have notes/Have read/To read/Find/Not Located/Deferred/In Pr...

Re: Custom reference types/field labels missed after update

At least one user has had success restoring his modified Type and field labels doing this: 1. Quit Bookends (important!) 2. Remove the file TypeAndFieldLabels.txt from the Bookends folder (use the Help menu to go to that folder). 3. Restore Bookends Preferences (also in that folder) from Time Machi...

"Find a group"--not that useful as implemented. Thoughts?

Hi I thought I'd start a discussion here before asking Jon for a feature request. I do not find the "Find a Group" (Search box that pops up when you click on "Group" at the top of the list of groups) behavior very useful. The manual says: "If a match is found Bookends will select that group and scro...

Re: Remove a reference from a group without deleting reference?

I have reported elsewhere that sometimes when trying to delete a reference from a static group, Bookends will instead say that it is going to delete the reference from the catalog. I haven't tested it to see if that is what Bookends would really do. I solved the problem by quitting and relaunching B...

Re: Strange and scary behavior for delete key

This continues to happen to me. I still don't know if it is a miscreant dialog, or if Bookends would really delete references even though I am selecting them through a static collection (because I am afraid to find out!) Here is the bug exemplified. I have clicked on the static collection "For BWP",...

Small caps -- Bookends represents them in two ways

Hi Jon said in a post that small caps "are more complicated than you think." Here is one example. (I am not asking for a change of behavior in Bookends, but pointing out the behavior for anyone else who is confused like I was). The journal I was formatting for likes to have author names in small cap...

Collaboration with co-authors--ideas?

How do people who use Bookends collaborate in writing drafts? The last project I worked on, I wrote the rough draft, passed it around and got a bunch of comments. My choices at this point were continue with the draft that I passed around and make all the changes, including bibliography formatting an...

Re: Genealogy?

Andy

As someone who keeps thinking about getting into genealogy, did you post your formats and citation types (reference types, I think) anywhere? Others might want to use or build on them.

Thanks

Alan

-1407 error on trying to restore from Time Machine

Hi I get a -1407 error when I try to to restore my Bookends database from Time Machine. I thought I should just document the problem here, and give two solutions if anyone else runs into this problem. I doubt that any of these issues are Bookends bugs, and perhaps the issue is unique to my machine (...

And, for what it is worth, this is a process that takes minutes, not the hours I feared. Thanks for that, Jon.

Re: Restore from backup -- How?

So, I am figuring this out, but let me be clear for the next person who runs into this problem. Jon, could you look this over to make sure I haven't left anything out. You have to open Bookends and create a new database. (This is because the cloud sync icon is only available when you have a database...
