Re: Set preferred order for metadata lookup when attaching new PDF

The reason I didn't default to full journal names in the filter is because PubMed doesn't capitalize them properly, which bothers me, at least. For example: The Journal of biological chemistry Lupus science & medicine Frontiers in immunology And also because we have a Medline glossary, which sub...

Re: Set preferred order for metadata lookup when attaching new PDF

This has caused me to revisit the issue of author first names, and I see now that the FAU tag is available even for very old references (although the value may be the initials in these cases). This wasn't always true. I'll update the default PubMed.fltr in the next release so that it will import ful...

Re: Workflow- viewing 2 PDFs and/or Notecards

Very good. I must point out to anyone else reading this thread, though, that the PDF display pane integrated in the library window has the exact same annotation tools as the standalone window. This is extensively covered in the User Guide (Help menu), starting on p. 35, Working with PDFs. Jon Sonny ...

Re: Include in bibliography a reference cited in a comment

There are a variety of metacharacters you can place at the beginning of a temporary citation that provide ad hoc tailoring of the final output. Please see the user guide (Help menu) for details. And you can see and apply them with Edit -> Copy Citation with Modifiers. In your case I think you are lo...

Re: Set preferred order for metadata lookup when attaching new PDF

In my experience PubMed provides better metadata than Crossref, and looking for DOIs on PubMed first is intentional. Having said that, Crossref is evolving (for example, it didn't provide abstracts until relatively recently, but PubMed has forever). And PubMed provides information such as full names...

Re: A.I. integration?

That's an interesting idea, but I have doubts that an AI can guess how you would want your data organized, and everyone would be different. What I can imagine one could to would be able to ingest the metadata of the references you have and come up with commonalities and differences, and suggest grou...

Re: Cited Pages in Parentheses after Pages for First Citation

If for this custom type you never want a comma output before the cited pages, remove it from the "before" field in the format. And remove the \\. It used to be that the settings for Cited Pages applied to all Types, but that changed a while ago and now they are Type-specific. So edit your ...

Re: Cited Pages in Parentheses after Pages for First Citation

Can you post an example of a temp citation which, after scanning, has this issue?

And also what is the "before" text is in your cited pages configuration (that's defined in the format you are using, Citation Options -> Common Settings).

Re: Colour Labels- more than 9 options?

Yes, the limit is 9 colors (plus black). There are many ways to quickly segregate related references. I suggest you simply make a static group for each paper/project You can even group your groups, if you want, so that one folder contains student theses, another is for your personal research, etc. N...

The a type's order in the list is a property that is used internally for many things and can't be changed.

Re: Workflow- viewing 2 PDFs and/or Notecards

1. It sounds like you've found a good solution. I don't know if it's any better than opening the other PDF in a different app, but note that you can have more than one PDF open in Bookends, too. To do this, go to Settings and tell Bookends to use a standalone window for editing, and to allow multipl...

Re: Combining a citation and its bibliography (the last name and the full name for the same author)

Yes. Bookends will interpret a + in the format as asking for the citation. In your case, a format like (+) a. d. t. l: u. gives me this in a test reference (Stephens, 1999) Stephens, C. 1999. Bacterial Cells: The Migrating Kinase and the Master Regulator. New York: Putnam. Please refer to the User G...

Re: "Temp Citation" vs "Temp Cite"

Thanks for reporting that. "Temp Cite" is correctly noted in the documentation and on the Scan & Bib page in Settings, but is mistakenly referred to as Temp Citation in the release notes. This has been fixed.

Re: Test for empty feild.

It would help enormously to simplify this format by (1) getting rid of ~ metacharacters unless they are essential (which is almost never) and if you need to guard against empty fields use $, and (2) build a small working example and then expand it. Your example is too complex for me to easily evalua...
