Unfortunately I'm not very familiar with AppleScript. The example you gave will only consider the last publication item, but I need to calculate the total number for all selected references, or all references in a group, not just for the last one.
Anyway, I managed to find the right script I was ...

Re: I need to know the total number of pages
Yes, that's the question I'm asking. What AppleScript command do I use in order to achieve this?Jon wrote: Sat Jan 22, 2022 8:21 am The AppleScript can ask Bookends for the formatted reference directly
I checked Bookend's AppleScript Dictionary, but I didn't find the necessary command.

Re: I need to know the total number of pages
The best thing I can think of is to create a format that outputs the pages field
That's a good idea. I created a new format and called it "Number of pages." For books, journal articles and reviews it has only one field, namely Pages range (p-). When I select references in Bookends and then ...

I need to know the total number of pages
Is it possible to show or find out somehow the total number of pages for a group or of selected references in the Library Window?
I think this can be quite useful, both for private use (how long will it take me to read all the books in the group?) or for teachers who are creating reading lists for ...

Re: Great update of reference pane in 14.0.4
I'm also happy with the restructuring of the reference pane in version 14.0.4 It's a great improvement!
The "horizontal" pane is clearly structured and gives a good overall view of the fields, allowing me to see all relevant details at a glance.
The "problem" with long custom labels which ...

Look at Lingbuzz: (https://lingbuzz.net) for example. […] When these kinds of sources appear, what I do is simply request a Translator. It doesn't take more than a couple of days to get a Translator. I am then good to go.
I can understand that Lingbuzz is a valuable site for you as a linguist ...

Re: Zotero is to Bookends, as Evernote is for DEvonthink
Zotero [is] best for collecting data.
It seems you use Zotero for scouring the Web for references. If I don't completely misunderstand, this can only mean that you are looking for brand new publications not older than, let's say, one week. Such publications are not (yet) to be found in any ...

Re: Zotero is to Bookends, as Evernote is for DEvonthink
I assemble and read PDF journal articles. Most recently, I read them on my iPad.
I don't have an iPad, so what's the advantage of reading them on an iPad rather on a Mac with PDF Expert, PDFpenPro or Skim?
What apps do you use to take notes, highlight text, etc. when you read a PDF on an iPad ...

Re: Zotero is to Bookends, as Evernote is for DEvonthink
So, what I do right now [is to] use Evernote as a temporary inbox to clip web pages precisely the way they appear on the web.
What browser are you using?
If you clip/save sites as Web Archive with Safari they should appear in DEVONthink exactly as they appear on the web.
Evernote requires you ...

Re: Zotero is to Bookends, as Evernote is for DEvonthink
I use Zotero as a temporary inbox, to scrap references from the web. I finally move these references to Be for permanent storage and manipulation, if I need to do so.
Zotero for Mac is actually restricted to MS Word, LibreOffice and GoogleDocs, so I guess you must be using MS Word.
The problem ...

Re: Citing literature in different languages
I meant a project which contains of literature both in English and German and some other languages.
Could you recommend how to use Bookends in that case?
I'm afraid I don't understand your problem anymore. So before I go into more detail, let's make a few things clear first.
1) In what language ...

How to contact a forum member?
Is there a way to directly contact a forum member without having the message appearing in the forum itself? Basically, the forum software seems to allow this, but the feature has been disabled, so it seems.
Could this be fixed?
Thanks.

Re: Multiple Last Names
"Van" is obviously equivalent to "van" in Dutch and to "von" in German, and it (originally) means "from"; so "van Zyl" originally meant 'from Zyl', I suppose. It's now used as a surname. Or in other words, it seems this guy has two surnames.

Hello Stephen,
if you want the cited author to be
Van Zyl Slabbert, Frederik
then enter Van Zyl Slabbert, Frederik into the Authors field. A comma after a string causes it to be output exactly as you entered it.
