Good idea - would reduce 'friction' of integrating with Bookends slightly, but significantly. Thinking back, I'm sure I've never changed the settings in that dialogue.

I'm glad that this has been asked for. This is the one feature that I often find myself wishing Bookends had. (There were others, but they've all been added over the years.)

Two more things: 1) The references aren't totally blank: after attaching the pdf they have just the JSTOR URL in the URL field. All other fields are empty. 2) I've just now Verified, Reindexed and Repaired the database, and tried again to attach a JSTOR pdf, with the same result: a reference blank e...

But anyway, it doesn't seem to be anything specific about those papers. I've just tried a different random paper from JStor with the same -null- result. I can send you that one too, of course, if it would help.

Perhaps related – I'm getting blank references today when I attach JStor pdfs (by downloading in Safari, then dragging them into Bookends) e.g. this one: https://www.jstor.org/stable/2156021 And the same with the one in the previous post in this thread, which I just tested. In the bibliography output for book chapters, it would be useful to be able to impose title case on the titles of edited books without also imposing it on the title of the book chapter. Plenty of journals want the titles of edited books in title case and the titles of the chapters in sentence case.

If using both is going to do harm, wouldn't it be a good idea to pop up a warning if the path to the database includes 'Dropbox' and they try to turn on iCloud sync?

I'd use this too, and would also prefer all mark-up to be removed from the exported pdf.

Roughly the same reason – I often share papers with colleagues, students etc., but don't want to send them my notes too.

I think that using a temporary citation format with the Unique ID number in it will fix this problem. Temporary citations with Unique ID look like this: {Conitz and Haukioja, 2012, #19006} The number is linked to that reference, so I think Bookends will find the right reference even if I change some...
