Hi Kristen, Three answers: 1. Good: To import the .fcgi file, drag and drop it on a reference window or the Hits window, then select PubMed from the popup menu when given the option. 2. Better: don't use a file at all. At the PubMed web site, output the tagged reference(s) to the screen, select All,...

Admittedly, this isn't really your problem, this is a @#$%ing stupid way to organize a database on their part. But if you can figure out a way around it I'll praise your name to the skies. And I'd deserve it! :-) No, you are right, there must be consistency in the text pattern. If a missing "f...

Variations between output in a text file are a problem. One suggestion is to segregate the kinds of references you want to import by Type (books, articles, etc.). Then make a different filter for each Type. In the example you gave, I can see how you could parse it with a Source field. Alternatively,...

Hi Enkidu, You are doing everything correctly, almost. When you reach the punctuation, in the next entry you must *ignore* until the next thing you want to collect. In your example, collect to . into Title. Then Ignore until letter. Then collect until ; as date (or whatever you like). This adds a li...

You need to create an import filter that will parse the information provided by that source (if it's a library, it's likely to be in MARC format). You would then either save the data (as text) to a file, or better yet simply copy it from the browser (if that's the app you are using to access the sit...

Re: More information about import filters in general

how do you make an import filter for a library or database you're interested in? Is it difficult? Good questions that would be better in the Bookends forum, but... Making a filter is pretty easy (well, IMO). It's quite logical, and spelled out in detail in the User Guide. The thing that usually giv...

Hi Ekius, This is from the phpBB user guide (not terribly grammatical, but...): "Polls are a special type of that allow community members to vote on an idea or issue.  Polls can only be made from the top post in a topic." Full info about the software used for this forum is here: http://ww...

Re: Licencing?

Hi guys, I work on both a laptop and a desktop computer. I'm just wondering whether my licence for Bookends is per-user or per-machine: can I install it legitimately on both without buying a new licence? Hi Staph, It's per user. If you are the only user, you can legitimately use it on a laptop and ...

Yes. Here are the instructions (from our web site, and in an appendix in the User Guide as well). Do this with 50 references exported from EndNote 4 to make sure it works for you (the name of the style in EndNote 4 may or may not be the same as EndNote 6/7, but it should be close -- if you can't fig...

Hi Davide,

That means you are using the original release of Word X. It didn't allow developers to place their own icons in toolbars.

A subsequent patch to Word fixed this (I think there were two patches in all). You can download that latest from the

www.mactopia.com

web site.

Re: Spelling

Jon: you are right. I am using Devon Word Service and CocoaSpell with OX 10.35. Obviously there is a problem here as I cannot make Bookends to access the speller via Services, Any help? You have to uninstall Devon Word Services -- it's either a bug in their software or in OS X, but whichever, Word ...

Bookends supports Services in OS 10.2 or later, so it should support spelling via CocoaASpell (there can be a problem with DevonThink Word Services preventing Bookends from accessing Services in OS 10.2 -- not sure about 10.3). As for supporting spelling via Mellel -- that would require that they pr...

I'm not sure what you mean. Mellel doesn't offer a spelling Service. There is free one, though, that you can install: CocoaAspell It can be found at http://www.ict.usc.edu/~leuski/cocoaspell/home.html I haven't used it, but it looks like it would fit the bill (and it has dictionaries for many langua...

Spell checking is something we are going to look into after Bookends 8 is out. Although if we implement it, it will be via OS X, and I'm not sure they allow multiple languages at once...

Hi Jeff,

Yes, Bookends 7.7.5 is compatible with Word 2004 (that tidbit is near the top of our home pages where we list features added in 7.7.5).
