Omitting shortjournal field if there is no abbreviation in the Journal glossary
Sorry for all the questions at the moment! If I have a journal article from the Journal named Iraq, there's no abbreviated form of the journal name. In my BibTeX export, I have added: shortjournal = {$j}, $ to the exporter, which works very nicely when there is an abbreviation in the glossary. But f...

Re: Cleaning up blank lines in Journal field
Actually I think I've figured out a way to do this: I search for all the Journal Articles with the appropriate Journal name, and then use the Refs –> Global Change –> Regularize Journal Name on the Hits list. I don't feel comfortable doing it on all the journal articles just yet with a few thousand ...

Cleaning up blank lines in Journal field
Hi, I'm trying to tidy up my references. Quite a few of them at import from online sources ended up with a field like this: Journal of Biblical Literature JBL This is fine in one sense because the JBL abbreviation shows up as a separate term in the Journal term list. I can then delete JBL from the t...

Perfect, and an obvious idea — in fact I wish I'd thought of trying that

Re: Case protection in BibTeX export format
Actually that's a great suggestion — you are right that it's definitely possible for me to make a list of all the words which should be case-protected, and that's likely to be extremely subject-specific so a user-defined list is no doubt the best approach.

Case protection in BibTeX export format
Hi, In general, I like using sentence case for my references within Bookends, because it is unambiguous which words are capitalised on purpose. I would like to preserve my careful use of case in my BibTeX export, which is actually aimed at BibLaTeX and for which Title case is best practice. I would ...

Force the linked BibTeX file to regenerate?
Hi, The 'Sync Linked BibTeX File' is super useful. I'm amending the included BibTeX.fmt to include such things as the shortjournal field. When I do that, or indeed when I update my Journal Glossary, I want to regenerate the entire linked BibTeX file. But the menu item only updates those references w...

It does show up that way (see attachment). I've tried rebuilding to no effect.

Format producing an unexpected result
Hi, I've got a PDF renaming format. It seems to be adding the year when I can't see how that is part of the format. The format is: u1 {s^t^}.pdf and it produces this for the book I'm trying it on: Postgate1974 Taxation and conscription in the Assyrian empire1974 The year is not in the title or the s...

BibTeX import with files
Hi, I'm trying to import a BibTeX file (exported from Zotero) which has a file field in it. In the Import filter manager, I've added the tag file to the Attachments field. Bookends correctly recognises that this should be an attachment. There are two problems thought: Bookends doesn't find the attac...

Re: Great update of reference pane in 14.0.4
I too prefer the horizontal layout. And this is a great update - really makes things look much nicer! My only additional thought is that I quite like the look of the DT pane's text boxes, with a soft outline, which also allows the field names to be regular rather than bold. But I realise such choice...

Re: [Feature Request] Auto-sync to a BibTeX File
I'm so happy to see this feature. I really appreciate you adding it @Jon. Gamechanger for me in terms of (finally) dropping Zotero and being back into Bookends. I have a similar workflow to @iandol and hence the ability to have references turn up in my .bib file without having to do a manual step or...

Re: Regex keywords smart group
Just figured it out - answer in case anyone else has the same question:
In the Bookends documentation it says that ^ matches the beginning of a line, but actually I think it matches the beginning of the field (similar for $).
Code: Select all
keywords REGEX '(^|\n)Biblical ethics(\n|$)

Regex keywords smart group
Hi, If I setup a Smart Group with this query: keywords REGEX 'Biblical ethics’ it returns results, but it also includes keywords that have 'Biblical ethics' as a substring of another keyword. But if I add ^ and $ characters it doesn't match anything: keywords REGEX '^Biblical ethics$’ How can I matc...
