Even stranger, this has done the trick. For whatever reason, replacing the app did not work. So I have trashed the not-working copy and copied the brand-new one into the app-folder. Now everything is fine again!

Currently (BE 12.5.8), there are no references shown if a folder is selected in the sidebar. I might be wrong, but I think this was different in past editions. Anyway, in my opinion this would be useful (e. g. to combine the hits of two or more smart groups).
