Re: Smart Group for references that "can't find file..."
If you are at all proficient enough to install and use AppleScripts with Bookends, you might be interested in my script at the link below. https://www.sonnysoftware.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=5566 The script generates a CSV report about the status of the library. It also can be set to label referenc...

Re: Joining two libraries
I've never considered corruption via ZIP as an issue. One distinction that says even more so to make a ZIP archive is that a library does not contain the attachments. The argument from this insight might be that, before you decide to test something on a library, you should combine both the library a...

Re: Joining two libraries
@vinschger ... When I am to do something that I should do on a "copy" of a file, I prefer to put the source file into a ZIP archive rather than making a copy of the file. I too easily loose track of why I have a "copy", for example MyLibrary copy.bdb versus MyLibrary.zip. I also ...

Re: Joining two libraries
I would perhaps create backups (within Bookends) of the two original libraries and put the two original libraries into a ZIP archive in addition to (or rather than) duplicating them.

Re: Bookends For The Lazy Newbie
@Jon Apologies. Your first point is duly noted, and I've amended my post accordingly. I agree about the harm caused by the grossly distorted the business model that publishing houses follow. I also agree that no one will be knocking on any one person's door at any time soon to check on whether you h...

Re: Bookends For The Lazy Newbie
From my experience, I agree that the best way to generate a bibliography in Bookends from scratch is to use on-line search tools. Another way to get reference metadata is from friends, colleagues, and others. This can also be a good way to establish a library metadata, especially for example when a ...

Defining default attachments subfolder for local library (not synced)
It seems that we can define a sub-folder for attachments only after we have set up a sync service. Otherwise, the Settings for the LOCAL LIBRARY does not expose the tab to set and move PDF files into a Default Attachment Subfolder. I'd like to have the option to define the default attachments sub-fo...

Re: Request/idea: NoteCard browser
Very cool features. ... ... But, the biggest drawback with [certain] apps (for reading and annotating pdf) is that the annotation is database-internal. It can be exported separately; but the annotation of the pdf doesn't follow the standard-adobe annotation system. ... Jon, you made really great de...

Re: Request/idea: NoteCard browser
@Jon ... FWIW, the other app that I tested to manage PDF annotations is [ZenReader](https://zenreader.co.uk). It acts as a cross between Obsidian (as an electron app) and Highlights and LiquidText / MarginNote. It requires an on-line connection even to run the free version. Perhaps the videos that d...

Re: Formatting annotation extractions: feature request
I see how the use of different markdown formatting can improve the ease in recognizing the source format for an annotation extracted from a PDF. The different types of annotations in a PDF are * highlight * underline * PDF note * comment The different types of (BE) notes (stored as notecards) are * ...

Re: Workflow Example: Bookends -> Obsidian
@Dellu -- I appreciate the request. Let me try to answer. I need to have a collaborative macOS<->Windows workflow to share information about references with my colleagues who work on Windows systems. While Mendeley, Zotero, Papers, or EndNote will provide the collaboration out-of-the-box, BE fits my...

Copy reference from one library to another?
Do we have a way to copy a reference from one library to another? The reference includes an attached PDF with annotations.
If not, I post a feature request to have the ability to Share or Copy a reference from one library directly to a different library.

Re: Export PDF Notes and Highlights
You have a rather sophisticated workflow. Nicely done! I expect one limitation may eventually be in the reliability of your iCloud sync. I do not see a way to bring a reference on the iPad into the Hits list on macOS. For this reason, I foresee a complicated process in the effort to create an automa...

Re: Export PDF Notes and Highlights
@postdoctoral -- Reading your processing steps on the PDF annotations, you could script this way 1) Detect that a PDF has been annotated (already completed) 2) Fire off a script that ... 2a) runs the extract PDF annotations menu using selected references as default ... Set this up by selecting a PDF...
