I just did this. It didn't change anything.Jon wrote:One thing for those affected to try is rebooting in Safe mode (Shift key held down). See if Bookends launches now without the error message. Then reboot normally.

Re: Could not import FormatLib since updating to 10.5.4
But is there a way to get open-on-launch working again?Jon wrote:It was a clue, and tells us that the error is spurious. If the library really could not be opened, Bookends would be unable to format references (you'd get the error message whenever you tried).

Re: Could not import FormatLib since updating to 10.5.4
I've had reports that the database can be opened after launch via the FIle menu. Bookends seems to be fully functional at that point. That might be a clue. I can indeed open the database via the File menu; it's the open-upon-launch that isn't working. I have to open the database via the File menu (...

Re: anyone else seen cases where command-shift-O doesn't work?
Thanks, but I don't think that the problem is a loss of focus.Rudi_Grams wrote:The shortcut works as long as the selected reference has focus in list view. If the highlight color is gray (focus lost) because you clicked into a field in the right panel or the attached PDF then the shortcut will not work.

anyone else seen cases where command-shift-O doesn't work?
I've discussed this a bit with Jon, but I wanted to ask here as well. Sometimes, inexplicably, selecting a reference with an attachment and then typing command-shift-O to open the attachment does nothing. Double-clicking on the preview (or the list item) of the attachment in the Inspector *always* w...

"out of bounds error" when opening library search dialog
I'm seeing this every time I open a library search dialog with 10.4.4 (and when this happens, dismissing the dialog results in its return and necessitates a forced quit). Returning to 10.4.3 solved the problem.
Anyone else?

Handling OpenURL lookups from *within* Bookends
Since Bookends now accesses WebKit, what do y'all think about having Bookends handle OpenURL lookups instead of sending them to Safari? I use OpenURL to 1) check to see the status of a work in our university online catalog, 2) order a work through interlibrary loan, 3) see whether the article is ava...

I misspoke, but you are correct: Address Book does use v3.0, but vcards are v2.1 when synced to (or simply created on) an iPhone, so I kept to the earlier version. How did you discover this? You're maintaining that when cards are created on the iPhone and synced back to one's Mac, they remain in v....

What you are seeing is a MacRoman representation of UTF-8 characters (which are 2-3 bytes in length). Did you set the Address Book encoding to UTF-8? You're right -- thanks. I did find that the import only works if the vcard format is set to 2.1 (with this . This is not without consequences: I just...

I checked -- it seems the ICU library that Mac OS X uses for indexing is pretty clever, and is treating the l' as the beginning of a word (it's clever about a lot of things, like distinguishing between a period at the end of a sentence and one that represents a decimal place for a number). The end ...
The indexes are determined by the way the underlying unicode library on Mac OS X works. You wouldn't want the apostrophe to be included, in any case, because then if you used an apostrophe as a quote mark (as many do) the word in 'quotes' wouldn't be found. But in any case, it's not mutable. In any...
Thanks for your detailed responses, Jon. 1. The Live Search uses relies on indexes to make it fast and, well, live. It would become a slow (if not glacial) search if Bookends did an unindexed search after every letter was typed. I think the convenience of a responsive live search outweighs the other...
