Another data point. I had a moderate document (less than 100 pages) and was unable to scan/unscan. Work would gobble up 100% of cpu while the unscanning effort would go on interminably. As Jon suggested, I was able to scan the rtf file and could have quit there. To "fix" the problem, howev...
