Re: Bookends 14.2.9 on MacOS Ventura constantly losing attachements

The first thing I'd do is Rebuild the library. If that doesn't help, I'll need more information. Such as what "losing attachments" means. The names are lost from the database itself? The names are there but Bookends can't find them? Where are they located? What is special about the ones it...

Re: Extract iOS Notes on Mac

Then they should be in the Notes field in the corresponding reference in Bookends. The notes belong to the reference, not the PDF.

Re: Extract iOS Notes on Mac

You don't even need to do that. When the window moves to the background it syncs. You can also Option-click on the cloud icon and Sync Now. So, where are the notes? Are they a PDF annotation note? Or are they in the notes field in the database? You can the former because it's a clickable graphic in ...

Re: Extract iOS Notes on Mac

I think you are referring to note added to the reference, not the PDF. In that case, they can be "extracted" with the annotations after (1) syncing the database reference metadata (the note is not embedded in the PDF), and (2) in the extraction setup, tell Bookends to Extract -> Reference ...

Re: Word scan not working

This sounds like corruption of a hidden citation, which throughs off the unscan (which precedes every scan). The way to deal with this is to remove the final citations immediately following the point of truncation (in the pre-scan document, of course) and see if the unscan works now. If so, unscan, ...

Re: How do I export to BibTex or RIS?

Select Bibliography Format and then choose either BibTeX.fmt or RIS.fmt and save to disk. For BibTeX you may want to change the output style from Styled Text to BibTeX (if you want character styles like bold and italic preserved) when the data are imported.

Re: Necessary files and folders to back-up or re-construct a Bookends database

Any Custom folders. If you're going to use Bookends cloud sync some Settings will be synced, which is preferable to moving the Preferences file between Macs.

Re: Access-Control Failure

It seems they updated the site in August 2023 and the settings in the import filter need to be changed. https://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/collections-and-resources/solo/z39-50 l'll do that for the next release. You can do that yourself in the Internet tab of the filter (open the Import Filter Manager an...

Re: Mismatch example vs. scan

Without the format and reference to examine here I can't say why the editor's names aren't separated properly in the output, but I can tell you that settings for this are in the format's Name Punctuation tab. Authors and editors can be treated identically or individually. If you open the format in t...

Re: ORCID not recognized

Having a valid ORCID is the first requirement but not the last. It also has to be recognized by OpenAlex, which I understand doesn't plumb ORCID.org but uses CrossRef (and perhaps other sources). Crossref doesn't recognize that ORCID ID, either. You can see that for yourself here https://www.crossre...

Re: Is there a way to force an iCloud update?

There is a Sync Now option in the icloud icon popup menu.

But I don't think that will help. You could hold down the Option key when you click the icon and Force Full Sync Now.

Re: Selector in Preferences for Default epub Viewer?

Each of the "open PDF" options has been hardcoded with the bundle ids of the associated app. But actually, your idea about offering a right-click option that had an Open with a hierarchical menu generated on-the-fly isn't a bad idea. I'll have to look into what APIs might be used to get th...

Re: Selector in Preferences for Default epub Viewer?

It is. But these aren't PDFs. They are epubs and the display for file types that Bookends can't render is quite different.

Re: Selector in Preferences for Default epub Viewer?

We already let users use a right-click to open any type of unrecognized file type in its default app, which is universally useful. What you're asking for is (1) only useful if you want to use more than one app to open the same file type (2) only useful for epubs. As I've mentioned, making a change i...

Re: Dragging Articles to Bookends, no author name appears

That's an issue with JSTOR, which frankly is difficult to work with. I last revisited this about 3 months ago, and will periodically. If they improve access to their metadata maybe at some point there will be a viable solution. It's hardly a great solution, but if you go the reference on JSTOR in yo...
