Import from PubMed Reference Type for Reviews

Post by med » Sun May 26, 2019 3:05 am

It seems when I import a reference from PubMed, or do Autofill from Internet, the reference type for reviews is set as "Journal article" instead.

For example, I try to import

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25991441
or
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=31040383

where its Reference/Publication Type on PubMed is listed as Review, however, the Reference Type is set as a journal article (this is for all my review articles) upon import. For my import filter manager of PubMed, the Type is set to PT, so I assume Bookends should be correctly parsing the Reference Type upon import.

The reason I'm doing this is to create a smart group of review articles. I was wondering if this is a bug, or I am doing something wrong

PubMed is actually returning 2 or 3 different values for PT in these cases. There's the first ref you cite

PT - Journal Article
PT - Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't
PT - Review

Bookends only can accept one, so it takes the first.

Hmmm, forgive me, where do you see PT values for Journal Article in the above two references? I only see "Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't" and "Review" for the first reference, and "Review" for the second reference.

First reference:

Second reference:

For both references, Bookends imports them as Journal article, even though the second reference only has Review listed. Is there a way also to change the algorithm so that if there's >1 PT values it chooses the reference type that is an exact match in your Reference types, else it chooses the default Reference type (so that "Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't" is overlooked)?

Display the PubMed reference as MEDLINE and you'll see the 3 options. Bookends has options for Journal Article and for Review, it can only assign one. You can of course change it after import (and can do so in bulk using a Global Change for Type). Or you can add the word Review to keywords.

Ah I see thank you. Yeah, I've been adding 'Review' to my keywords, but was wondering why Bookends wasn't able to parse the info automatically. Thanks!
