Assuming that { and } are the temporary citation delimiters, how can I enter a sentence like this one into a manuscript ?

You can double them:

But you can't rescan if you do, because the scanned ms will have single curly brackets where the doubles were.

You can also change citation delimiters in preferences to [ ] or ~ ~.
