(Smith 1997a) and (Smith 1997b) versus (Smith 1997)

Post by Deban »

When I am citing two papers by the same author in the same year, sometimes they come out as "(Smith 1997a) blah blah (Smith 1997b)" in the final scanned paper in both the citation and the bibliography, and sometimes they come out as "(Smith 1997) blah blah (Smith 1997)". I have not been able to figure out why the inconsistency exists. It seems as though it may be that when I cite someone else between the two Smiths, the a and b are left off, but when they are cited together, the a and b are there. Any ideas anyone?

Great program otherwise! I am using it with Mellel, and it is very slick and stable and friendly to use.
