Spaces in metatags

Post by alanterra »

Hi

I don't think that this issue is addressed in the manual or here. Although the discussion of metatags makes it look like they allow you search for a bunch of keywords, it turns out that they match keywords by matching words in the keywords, not by matching the entire keyword string.

For instance, take the example from the manual:

If you have a reference with the keyword "Honey" but not "Honey crisp", it will be found with a search for "Apple…":

As seen here:

I don't think that this is at all clear from the discussion in the manual.

This behavior is causing me difficulty. I was hoping to use metatags to create a taxonomic hierarchy of species. For instance I want Peromyscus californicus to be in the metatag Cricetidae, while Macrotus californicus should be in Phyllostomidae. This won't work, unless I make all my tags one word (e. g., "Peromyscus_californicus"), which would be an annoying amount of work. It will be easier to just add the family name as another tag and not use metatags — unless someone has a good idea of how to achieve this.

Get 13.0.2 when it's released tonight. This issue should be resolved, and metatag searches will honor spaces. Note that in the example you gave (the Find dialog) the setting for the search type (e.g. whole words) will be ignored for metatag searches -- they will always be for "characters".
