link to pdf missing after bib file import to bookends

Post by egm1b »

Hello,

I have just purchased Bookends and would like to import my Jabref library (2500 references) into Bookends while preserving the link to my pdfs. I have managed to open the bib file with bookends and all the references are there but no link to the pdfs. Any ideas as to how I could link the references to the pdf files automatically without having to do it manually?

Here is an example entry from my bib file and the field "File" contains the location and link to the pdfs.

Code: Select all

@article{McClenahan2011,
	Author = {McClenahan, Patricia L},
	Doi = {10.1353/arc.2010.0000},
	File = {~/Documents/Work/Writing/Library/McClenahan_2011.pdf},
	Issn = {0066-6939},
	Journal = {Arctic Anthropol.},
	Month = {oct},
	Number = {2},
	Pages = {97--103},
	Publisher = {University of Wisconsin Press},
	Title = {{Cultural Remains in Local and Regional Context on the Central Alaska Peninsula: Housepits, Language, and Cultural Affinities at Marraatuq after 1000 B.P}},
	Url = {http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/arc/summary/v047/47.2.mcclenahan.html http://dx.doi.org/10.1353/arc.2010.0000},
	Volume = {47},
	Year = {2011},
	Bdsk-Url-1 = {http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/arc/summary/v047/47.2.mcclenahan.html%20http://dx.doi.org/10.1353/arc.2010.0000},
	Bdsk-Url-2 = {http://dx.doi.org/10.1353/arc.2010.0000}}
Many thanks

You can import the file location into the URL field of Bookends by editing the BibTeX import filter (Import Filter Manager). But that won't make it an attachment. To do that you'd need to export it from your current reference manager as EndNote XML, or as a RIS file where the PDF names was in the L1 tagged field. That will place the file name in the internal attachments field. I don't think that JabRef exports EndNote XML, but BibDesk (also free) does, so presumably you could import to BibDesk first, then export as EndNote XML.

For Bookends to find the attachment, the PDF must be moved to the default attachments folder (set in Preferences).

Thanks Jon,

I can only export to RIS from JabRef but the RIS L1 field appears in the Notes field in Bookends. I moved the pdf in the Bookends default attachment folder but it didn't seem to work. Where should the RIS L1 field content appear in Bookends?

Sorry, that only works with Zotero (Bookends expects to find a folder with the PDFs in the parent folder of the RIS file, which is how Zotero exports them). Please try passing the references through Bibdesk and exporting that as EndNote XML.
