Making DOIs clickable

Post by joseph_anton »

Following recommendations from the MLA, I started keeping a field in Bookends for DOIs where they were available and set up a custom format that would display the DOI rather than the URL in my works cited. I realized, however, that a drawback of this approach is that the DOIs that appear in my PDF are not "clickable" - it's necessary to copy and paste them into a browser to open the journal article. I wonder whether there is any way of indicating in a custom format that a DOI should be interpreted as a URL?

Complicating this question is the MLA recommendation that the works cited should not show "http://" or "https://" in hyperlinks!

There's no way embed clickable links in the text -- you can actually put the HTML code in the format to do this, but the word processor would interpret it as text, not a link.
