I have an author in my library whose name is O'Mahony. If I search for her publications, I only get 2 or 3 rather than a dozen of the entries in the library. I vaguely recall, from many years ago, that this type of problem may be related to font or some convention--perhaps in connection with the apostrophe. Ideas?

Searching how?

If it's a typical live search or Find dialog "words beginning with" then the apostrophe is ignored, since those are indexed searches. It's much more likely that the index is damaged. So Rebuild your library or reindex it.
