Book chapter: chapter title versus book title

I am working with a publisher whose house style includes the following for a chapter in an edited book: the chapter title is in Sentence Case, while the book title is in Title Case. For example:

Holodynski, M. (2009). Milestones and mechanisms of emotional development. In B. Röttger-Rössler & H. J. Markowitsch (eds), Emotions as Bio-cultural Processes (pp. 139–163). New York: Springer.

In the formats manager, I can see only one 'title' field for a book chapter, and it defines the format for *both* the chapter title and the book title. Is there a way I can define them separately?

No. It goes a bit against the philosophy of having text styling controlled by the format, but you can use Global Change to change the case of any field in batch. The in the format use "as entered" for case.

So thinking this through (and reading from the User Guide, copied below)... I could Global Change the 'Title' field to Sentence Case. That would change the Chapter Title. And the 'Volume/Issue' field (in Global Change) would be the book title?

I need to be sure that changes I make won't mess up my regular format, in which both chapter title and book title are output in Sentence case. Is there a way of selecting all and only the Book Chapter records? I have many article titles with proper names 'escaped' with a comma, which I don't want to force a case change on.... And of course if I make the above change to a Book record, that will change the Book Title to Sentence Case, which is the opposite of what I want.

"Title: The title of an article or chapter belongs here. If you are citing an entire book, its name belongs in the Title field. If you are citing a chapter from a book, the chapter title goes here, and the name of the book belongs in the Book Title field (by default, the label for the Journal field, as shown above, changes to Ser. Title (Series Title) when the Type is set to Book). In a format you can tell Bookends to output titles in special cases (Sentence case, Title Case, etc.)."

Here's the problem. Consider this:

Author, A. B. (2019). Chapter about the Efe in Zaire. In Editor, C. D., (Ed.), Book about the Aka in Africa. Cambridge University Press.

If I global change the chapter title to Sentence Case, the 'E' and 'Z' will be lost. If I global change the book title to Title Case, the 'A' and 'A' will be lost when I return to my regular format (APA).

1. You can do a Find by Type (Book Chapter) and do a Global Change on the hits.
2. There is a list of words maintained in Preferences whose case won't change when you apply a case (check to make sure it applies to Global Change, too, I can't check that myself at the moment).
3. Do this on a COPY of your library, so no harm is done if there is some change you don't like.

1. Yes, found it
2. There are too many capitalized words for this to be feasible
3. good idea

Can I make a request for a change to the Format Manager to allow separate control of the case of the Chapter Title and Book Title? The publisher I'm working with is a major international player. They use various reference formats, but this one must be fairly common.

I'm glad that this has been asked for. This is the one feature that I often find myself wishing Bookends had. (There were others, but they've all been added over the years.)

Jon, if there a possibility we might see this in a future version of Bookends?

It's on my list. The main problem isn't coding, it's the UI. I haven't come up with a good way to handle that.

Jon, before I pay for BE 13.4.1, has this feature been implemented?

The release notes suggest that this is now done in 13.4.3?
