Editing citations in MS Word

This should be obvious but I can't find anything on how to do it. I have scanned my document and the temporary citations have been replaced with (author, date, page) per Harvard style. I want to do further edits, which means tweaking the citations (removing author, for instance) but want to convert them from MS Word fields to just text. I have tried command/shift/F9 but what I get is the temporary citation with some extra characters.
Is there a way to do this?
Thanks,
Stephen Martin.
