Moving to a new Mac

Post by rickl »

I'm retiring one Mac and moving over to a new MacBook Pro. Before I go ahead, I just want to check I'm not missing anything in how to do that:
  • Download and install Bookends on the new Mac.
Copy my libraries to the new Mac.
Turn off syncing on the old Mac.
Turn on syncing on the new Mac.
I'm probably overthinking this, but I have a vague unease that things may not work the same way as they have been. Anything I need to bear in mind?

I have another sync-related concern, but it's basically unrelated so I'll write that in a separate post.

That's about it. Also copy your attachments, of course.

I have the attachments in iCloud Drive, so I assume they're taken care of.

Yes. Make sure to set preferences accordingly on the new Mac.

Hi Jon, I wonder if it would also make sense to split out the OpenURL prefs from the preferences file into a separate file that we could just copy between machines (like bookmarks currently). It is a real pain to have to do this via the GUI (I have about 15 OpenURL searches set up, and do regularly edit them), and my solution is to copy/paste from your JSON preferences by this is quite prone to error, so having a separate file would be better?

Possibly. Or add them to cloud sync.
