Italics in bibliography

I'm sure there is an easy answer, but I can't find one anywhere!! I'm using bookends and Mellel, and I can't get my citations/bibliography to put italics on anything.
The format manager clearly shows that the title is in italics, but even in the 'example bibliography' at the bottom of that screen, it doesn't show the reference in italics.
I even tried using the 'mapping' feature in the bibliography section of Mellel and have directed 'text in' italic' to use the style and variation that is italic in my document and still no go. I've got about 300 different references and 1000 footnotes and I'm due to turn in within a month or two and don't want to have to manually convert every citation/bibliography reference title to italics!
Any idea what I am doing wrong?
