Nature, Vancouver Bibliography 'missing' references

Post by tkkv »

Hello,

I'd like to use Nature, Vancouver or any similar citation style that uses numbers within the text to cite references. Unfortunately I cannot make it work.

I have multiple citations to the same book. The citations are in the following format:
(These are just examples:)
{Maguire, 2005, #53554@45-46}
{Maguire, 2005, #53554@112}
{Maguire, 2005, #53554@259}

When I scan the text there will be only one reference in the bibliography and it will not include any page numbers. And all the citations will have the same reference number.

I hope someone could help me with this.
Thank you!

That's how these journals cite.

You can cite a reference multiple times in the text, but it will be represented only once in the bibliography (and that number will be used in the body each time you cite that reference).

As for Cited Pages, that applies to the citation in the text, not the reference in the bibliography. And in any case, it only applies to custom or author-date citations, cited pages are ignored for numbered citations.

Thank you for the answers.

Is it possible to create a custom format in Bookends where
1) cite by numbers
2) cite by a different number when referred pages are different even if the source material is the same
3) the referred page numbers are shown in the bibliography

No. I'm not aware of any journal that uses such a scheme, it really makes no sense. For footnotes, yes. For a bibliography, no.

Hi Jon,

Thank you for the input.

I’m not writing a journal article. I’m writing a book.

I think it makes sense to cite by numbers. If the reader is interested in finding more about the topic, she can do so. If not, the small numbers within the text will not stop the flow of reading.

Also, it is good to provide the interested reader with the exact page numbers of the referenced material.

Do you have any suggestion?

Thank you again Jon!

In the citation (in the body of the text) you can provide pages numbers in several ways. If you want to use numbered citations, the simplest way is to use quoted text

{temp cite\, p. 13\}

which might be changed after a scan to

(1, p. 13)
