Is it possible to add pages to numbered citations?

Post by Maximus »

My reference format requires a following style of citation:

[1, p.4]
[2, s.5]
[1, p. 15]

1. Newsted, 2006.
2. Hetfield, 1967.

If I understand in the right way, it can't be done with numbered citations.

But I have no idea, how to do that in custom reference. According to the user manual the #-symbol "should only be used for bibliographies, not citations."
Could you advise, how can I input the sequential reference number and page numbers at the same time?

You can use literal text in-between backslashes in the temp citation to include whatever text you want in the scanned citation:

{temp citation\, p. 4\}

{temp citation\, s. 5\}

Returning to the topic.
After "Cite by -> Number" is selected I can't get any in-between backslashes text in the scanned citation. (see attached files)

I don't know if this is the cause, but you are mixing cited pages with quoted text. Use one or the other.

1. Cited pages. In the format define what is output before them, then use them like this @479-489

2. Quoted text. Do not use @. Just output the text the way you want it between backslashed, like this \p. 479-480\

Jon, thank you for a fast response.
The cause is not in @. (and in the BE manual one can find such a "mixed" type of citations).
The text between backlashed disappears after scanning.
May be this details will help: I use Mellel 5.1.4, BE 14.2 - and I add pages between backslash AFTER converting text to citations.

I tested it once more. I believe the issue occurred because I added backslashes after converting text to citations in Mellel.
(citations on this stage don't have braces {})
I've tried to add text between backslashes before converting citations - and it works. (It is a pity that I have to redo part of the previous work).

You mean you added them after a scan and didn't rescan? If so, you shouldn't expect any change in the originally scanned citation. Bookends handles the reference formatting, not Mellel, so just changing it without scanning will have to effect.

If it was something else and I misunderstand, please correct me.

I can‘t respond earlier (had to finish and submit my article before the deadline).
My workflow includes Scrivener & Bookends (writing and incerting citations from BE) -> Mellel & Bookends (final formatting and scanning citations).
After importing text from Scrivener to Mellel citations should be transformed from text (otherwise BE won‘t recognize them).
And the final stage - scanning citations with BE.
To sum it up the stages are:
1) transform text to citations in Mellel.
2) scan citations in Mellel.

I‘ve noticed that adding text between backslashes only takes effect before stage 1. If I add this text after stage 1 (before stage 2), it won‘t show after scanning.

I'd have to double check, it's been a while, but I think citation objects are reverted to the original before the scan. In any case, don't make changes in those (Eyal must have his reasons, but I'm not sure why citation objects are editable).

I had to make changes before scanning because I needed to add page numbers to cite by number.

I'm not seeing a problem. I opened a citation object and edited it to look like this

Bollback and Huelsenbeck, 2001, #208995\ test\

When I scanned, the output was

(1 test)

You can't use the @ with a numbered citation. Use the backslashes as above (and put in \p. 470-480\, or the equivalent).

Did you edit the citation object in Mellel's pop-up window?
That's strange, because I have problems after scanning text between backslashes...

I didn't know about @ and numbered citations. When I composed text, I insert citations with @. And the journal which I chose later requires the numbered citations style with pages.
