Chicago 17 requirement for page citation number before URL

Post by boldvigil »

I’ve been using Bookends for a couple of years now, but have encountered a formatting issue that I can’t seem to figure out for my dissertation.
In Chicago Style #17, it requires the page number of the citation to appear before the URL/DOI. Example from Turabian.

Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment, trans. Constance Garnett, ed. William Allan Neilson (New York: P. F. Collier & Son, 1917), 444, https://archive.org/details/crimepunishment00dostuoft.

Turabian, Kate L.. A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, Ninth Edition: Chicago Style for Students and Researchers (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing) (p. 187). University of Chicago Press. Kindle Edition.

I can create a format for all the different sources I am using, but cannot figure out how to insert the page citation before the URL. I use “z” for the URL. By using the “insert citation with modifiers” or manually placing the citation page number with @, it always put it at the end of the citation.
I use Scrivener for writing and then convert to MicroSoft Word, and then scan the document. I looked in the manual, but did not see any reference. Did I miss something? Can you help?

Cited Pages are always placed at the end, so in this case you can't use them. I can think of a few solutions, but they aren't very good.

1. Use a user field to hold the page you want to cite and add that to the format (before URL). This only works if you are citing one page (or range) from that reference.

2. Enter the page and URL as quoted text:

{temp cite\, 444, https://archive.org/details/crimepunishment00dostuoft\}

Not sure if this needs a new thread or not. When citing multiple sources in a single footnote, Chicago 17 requires they be separated by a semi colon without a period at the end of each individual citation. Is there a way to remove the period after the page number in formatting?

Formatted by Bookends-
Heitman, Register, 154.; Calhoun, Pension List on January 19, 1820, 604.; “Revolutionary War Patriots Buried in Ohio,” 151.; Revolutionary War Patriots Buried in Ohio, 76.

Desired

Heitman, Register, 154; Calhoun, Pension List on January 19, 1820, 604; “Revolutionary War Patriots Buried in Ohio,” 151; Revolutionary War Patriots Buried in Ohio, 76.

Thanks.

Yes, it should definitely be a new thread, no one will find it here based on the subject heading.

Short answer: remove the period at the end of the order field, e.g.

a, “t,” f v$, no. $i` `(d).

should be

a, “t,” f v$, no. $i` `(d)

In situations where you want the period output (e.g. one footnote), place it after the temp citation yourself:

{temp cite}.

It would be so nice if that ending period were inserted automatically… It would solve the problem of ibidem with the same cited pages.
Now:
Marion, God without Being, 25.
Marion, 30.
Marion
(On this last line there is no period if the page is also 30, like the previous one!)

Desired:
Marion, God without Being, 25.
Marion, 30.
Marion.

Best wishes,
Nicolae
