Push/background/auto-sync

Post by DarrenIngram »

It would be nice if the IOS app could sync in the background at a pre-set interval, e.g. every day/every week in addition to any sync actions that may occur when the program is launched. I tend not to use the IOS app that much (yet) so each time I fire it up there's a long sync and since there is no (from what I see) "x% of sync done" notifier, you are left to wait and guess when the sync may be finished.

A very small thing I noticed the last time I used the app in any case.

I use iCloud sync which magically keeps every system I use (iMac, Macbook, iPad and iPhone), always up-to-date without any fussing. So I assume you are referring to another sync method?

I was referring to Bookends and IOS / iCloud sync. My perception was that it only syncs when "opened" based on a possibly faulty observation, hence the query to the developers.

It does perform a sync when it first opens for me too, so I think your observation is correct (but even on poor internet, it is done in the blink of an eye for me at least, and PDFs are synced even with bookends closed via iCloud drive). I'm not sure if running a background sync even when bookends is not open is possible (or desirable, as that would consume some battery etc), Serge would need to comment...

Metadata sync is fast even for 100s of references it should be a second or two (if the connection is fast). If you have 1000s to update (how often?) then, yes, you should wait a bit longer. At this moment we will stay with syncing on open, going to background, and close. But If someone else finds syncing in background feature useful for their workflow please let us know in this thread.
