Highlight Selection and Make Bookends Notecard

Post by enrico.scarpella »

Hi all,

I believe my post is at least in part related to the previous one, but because I am not sure, I am creating a new one.

I would like to highlight text selections and make notecards from PDFs in either Bookends for Mac or Bookends for iOS and see those highlighted selections and notecards on both my Mac and my iPad.

I am able to highlight selections and make notecards in Bookends for Mac, but I cannot see those highlights and notecards in Bookends for iOS. Furthermore, I have not found a way to highlight selections and make Bookends notecards in Bookends for iOS.

Could you please be so kind as to help me out or at least point me in the right direction? Thank you for your consideration.

Best regards,
Enrico

Yes, they are related, and it's our next feature we are currently working on.

Hi, Enrico. Yes, it sounds like it is the exact same question, if I understood correctly. Seems we had the same thoughts!

Serge: excellent, I'm very pleased to hear it's the next feature! It may seem a small change, but I think it could profoundly affect the way some people use Bookends.

I have just updated Bookends for iOS on my iPad and am pleasantly surprised to see that all the notecards I had created in Bookends on my Mac have now appeared in my Bookends for iOS: thank you very much for that feature!

I do have a question, though: I could not figure out how to create a notecard in Bookends for iOS; could you please clarify that for me or at least point me in the right direction? Thank you for your consideration.

Best regards,
Enrico

If the reference doesn’t have any notes, you will see a button (looking like a link) under the abstract: “Add a note…”.
If there are some notes already, they will be displayed in a note stream and you should scroll to the end to see the last notecard titled “Add a note”. We will add a new tutorial about note stream to our web site soon.

Hi Serge,

Thank you for your prompt and helpful reply. I found both means of adding a new note you indicated in your reply, but those were not what I was looking for — my apologies: my post was unclear. What I am looking for is a way to highlight text in a pdf and directly make a note from it, just like one can do in Bookends for Mac, but perhaps it’s not possible (yet?) in Bookends for iOS.

When you mentioned that you were working on implementing the note stream, I dreamt of a split view where I could read and highlight a pdf on one side of the screen and see my note stream on the other. I find that the iPad is a better device than my laptop to read papers, but I always annotate the papers I read, so I end up doing all my reading on my laptop, and I basically never use Bookends for iOS other than to support Sonny Software, which I do with pleasure. Could you please consider adding the feature I described above in the future? Thank you for your consideration.

Best regards,
Enrico

This would be immensely useful. One of the problems with the more stream on iOS is that to add a new note requires scrolling right through the note stream first – which is a pain when one has 100+ notes – before reaching the ad note button. To do this one is bad enough, but to need to repeat it every time one wants to add another highlight is so frustrating as to make it not worth doing. An added problem is that any new notes are just added to the end – it seems impossible to put them into their correct position.

Tap and hold on any visible notecard and via the contextual menu you will see the "Show all notes" option. All notes can be edited as plain text there.
