Smart groups based on keywords

Trying to create a smart group based on keywords is driving me mad. I use them all the time on the Mac and I understand why they don’t sync across, but it’s such a shame.
My problem is that most keyword-based smart groups o create just don’t work. I’ve been trying to create one that searches for the keyword “Niebuhr, Richard” – I have about 30 references including it, which I find without difficulty on the Mac. But on iOS nothing shows. I’ve tried just searching for “Niebuhr” but still nothing. I’ve tried changing the search to “does not contain” but then it shows all references including those that do contain “Niebuhr, Richard”!
What’s going wrong?
