I don't grok how in-text MLA citations work

Post by Jake-1 »

I've been struggling to learn how to use Bookends and Mellel together for a conference paper I'm writing,under the theory that I'll want to master them by the time my dissertation rolls around. In any event, I have a book with a dozen quotes I'd like to use, and MLA style demands that one use the format (author page), or, in this case, a quote that will eventually say:

"But the one dimension of Marlow's story that has been little [...] By contrast, Marlow's experience seems to teach permanent imbalance and uncertainty." (Winner 2).

But I also have quotes from later pages, so I'd need in-text citations from (Winner 12), etc. Do I create a new reference with different page numbers for each quote, and put the quote in my notes, as I've done in the example, as shown in the attached image? That's the only obvious way I see of accomplishing the multiple quote issue, as Bookends doesn't appear to have a field for "page number, quote," that could then be inserted in Mellel. Nonetheless, I also don't see an easy text command for "duplicate entry," which would be helpful if this were the optimally efficient way to accomplish what I'm doing.

Given these inconsistencies, I suspect I'm doing something wrong. After reading the introduction and parts of the user guide and sections in this forum, I'm still unsure. Any thoughts would be much appreciated, as I'm surely not the first person with this problem, and I don't grok what I should be doing.

(Alternately, if any Bookends gurus happen to be at the University of Arizona, let me know!)

EDIT: I forgot to note that This thread shows someone using MLA in general, but doesn't address the issue of multiple cites from different pages of the same work.

Hi,

First, you can use the same reference and cite different pages it from it using Cited Pages:

{temp citation@13-14}

Please look up Cited Pages in the User Guide to see how that works.

Second, there is a Refs ->Duplicate command, as well as a Refs -> Replicate as Book Chapter.

If I get what you mean correctly, then you want to store the quotes in Bookends to (i.e. the content of the quotes, the text). This is not the way Bookends (or Sente or Endnote) would usually be used. Usually, you would just keep the reference information in Bookends and you would enter the content of the quotations yourself and only then enter a citation field after the quotation (in which you use the format that Jon said, i.e. blablabla@14-15 for a quotation of blablabla that ranges from page 14 to 15).

You can, of course, put your quotations into the notes field of Bookends. But this can get pretty ugly when you have a lot of quotations for a single source. In this case, I would recommend attaching a file to the Bookends entry (I usually use OmniOutliner to write excerpts for a text that I have read on paper, or if I have the text as a PDF, I will attach the PDF into which I have put highlights and comments using Preview).

Hope this helps!
