custom citation format

Post by jb »

Is it possible to create a custom citation format (User Guide p. 144) that includes only the author's (or editor's) surname?

Thanks

Do you mean for the temporary in-text citations? (I.e. the references that will later be changed to the actual citations when you create the bibliography.) If yes, then I think this would only work if you only have one work by each author, because Bookends would not be able to distinguish between different books by the same author if only the author’s surname is entered as the citation information.

However, should you mean if Bookends can produce a final output where only the surname and nothing else appears in the text, then yes, that would be possible. To achieve this you would have to do the following:
  1. create a new format in the Formats Manager in which you only put the author (or editor?) name into the output field
  2. switch the name option to “Surname Only” (see screenshot below)
  3. open your main format in the Formats Manager & go to the third tab (“Citation Options”) of your format and there select your newly created format as the “custom citation format”
That should do the job, I hope. :)

Thank you. This makes it clear. I just missed that "Surname Only" button.
