Difficulty Viewing PDF

I have recently noticed that when I attach a PDF document to a reference, only if it is a high-quality PDF from a journal's web site/JSTOR am I able to view it in the preview pane. Otherwise, it does get attached but I am unable to read it in the pane and it says that . Any suggestions? Thanks.
