attaching a file takes 'forever'

Sometimes, not always, when I link an attachment to a record, the little colored ball just goes round and round and round. Eventually the attachment link window shows up, but it could be 30 to 45 seconds before it does. This is an inconsistent phenomenon. Many days the attachment is almost instantaneous, other days (or times of the day) it takes so.o.o.o long. The use/non-use of other programs does not appear to be a confounding variable, as this can happen when nothing else is running, or when I am running several programs.
It almost seems as though there is a clock, or wait-period, while the computer looks for something. But it is a real pain.

What can be done?

I have made similar experiences with some PDFs, notably PDFs produced by scanning books and then having them OCR’ed in Adobe Acrobat. These files also scroll very slowly in Preview. The work around that I found was to open these "slow" PDFs in Preview and then re-save them. That way Preview changes some stuff in the PDF so that the display is much quicker.

Not sure if this is your issue, but maybe this can help…
