Problems with selecting references and highlighting windows

Post by rikvosters »

Hi all,

I've been using Bookends for a couple of years now (switched to v 11 a while ago), but I ran into a problem recently, which is very annoying. I don't know what's causing it, but it does appear to effect both of my machines, so I suspect it's nothing related to my operating system or anything like that. Anyway, I'm just throwing it out here... maybe some of you have had the same problem, or know a fix.

The problem seems to concern highlighting parts of the app's different windows. For instance, when I click on a reference in my list, the window at the bottom which normally then shows the entire reference in the selected style, does not react at all. As you can tell from the screenshot added to this post, it does highlight the reference I clicked on ('De Vooys 1943'), but it does not seem to select it -- rather, I'm still seeing the reference below of another work ('De Vocht 2003'). I do not always experience this problem, and it seems to go away for a while when I press TAB, but after switching to another Mac OS X app and back, it's there again. In any case, even when I use the TAB trick, right-clicking any reference provokes no reaction by the app at all. When I want to send a reference to Word, I can still use the CMD+Y shortcut, which causes BE to send my reference to the clipboard, but the program window does not change to Microsoft Word -- I need to change windows myself, and press CMD+V myself to get the {}-reference in Word. Another, probably related problem, is that I do not seem to be able to open any groups of references anymore. Whatever I do (the TAB thing doesn't work here), it just won't select any group I click on, and keeps showing me all 843 references I have, instead of just a subset.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on? It's pretty annoying, and I have no clue what to do.

Thansk already,

Rik

Hmm, doesn’t ring a bell for me. Strange problem…

Maybe this could still be related to some aspect of the OS / system setup. What OS do you have installed on the two machines? Do you use Spaces? Do you have SIMBL plugins, or system extension/addons installed (e.g. things like WindowShade or FruitMenu etc.)?

Strange problem indeed. I have Mac OS X 10.6.6 on both machines. Not using Spaces or any of the things you mention. I do use Quicksilver (app launcher) and Growl. I have, however, been using both of them for ages, and I cannot think of anything specific I installed recently which might have triggered the problem.

I guess you have already tried to rebuild your database?

Yep, tried that, didn't work. When I verify it, it says there are no problems. I did have to repair it a few times in a row a while ago...

The failure to switch to Word when you copy citation may be a clue. You have to tell Bookends that it is your word processor in preferences. If you have, and it's not switching, I'm guessing your preferences file is damaged. Try removing it and relaunching Bookends in that case. Does that help.

Of course this wouldn't explain the same issue on two Macs. So, if you create a fresh database, can your reproduce the problems you are having? If so, please contact tech support directly and we'll follow this up.

Yes. I did rebuild the database. But the problem is still present. Actually, I can not sort the database. When I clicked the column such as authors, date, Added, nothing happened.
